Where to start with Home Automation?

Planning is actually critical if you don’t want a patchwork quilt of products and apps that may or may not actually talk to each other.

You can, but should you?

There is a certain satisfaction to being able to cobble a solution together that does great things. It is was what drove me to my career in IT! But with maturity comes wisdom. Purpose built products exist for a reason. Let’s explore the benefits.

Is this a fun hobby, or are you really trying to make your home safer and more automated?

This stuff can be huge fun. But is that your goal? Are you just very busy and want things to work on the first button press, and call someone to help when it doesn’t? Or, do you want to do everything yourself, and you are OK with things occasionally not working and having to pull an all-nighter to figure it out? Or somewhere in between?

What is your measure of value?

For some, paying $50 a month for professional monitoring is a no-brainer. For others, that is outrageous. Let’s explore together why self-monitoring may not be all it’s cracked up to be. When the defecation hits the rotary – oscillator, professional monitoring alerting the authorities will be welcome.

Are you really ready for ‘Do It Yourself’ (DIY)?

It is SO tempting to buy the parts and do it yourself, especially when door sensors and the like just seem so easy. Spend a few dollars, stick it on with double-sided tape, join to the device and you are good to go, right? What about running wire to make the install look neat and be more secure? Do you know what the local codes are to prevent yourself from accidentally creating an unsafe situation or making your homeowner’s insurance useless?

Is this fit for purpose?

So this is going to protect your home, right? What happens when the Internet is out? Or the Power? Or an automatic update happens and it bricks your custom built automation server? Let’s discuss system stability, redundancy, and fault tolerance.
