Why this site?
Being home automation enthusiasts for over a decade we cringe when we see so many consumer grade devices sold in big box stores that are, well, just junk.
The manufacturers of various appliances and systems (like your home’s HVAC system) all have ‘smart’ options, but most of them also are rather lackluster.
There are tried and true technologies and solutions out there which can be integrated and leveraged to make a much better and safer product for your home. These are sometimes offered in a DIY flavor and with the right knowledge you can create a system that is greater than the sum of its parts.
The sadness I feel…
As I peruse social media or talk with people I hear a familiar refrain… “Hey, I bought a new house and I want to rip out this old security system and replace with something modern.” A small part of me dies inside. While there are modern security systems, those folks aren’t considering one. They are intending to buy something consumer grade and call it ‘done’. When actually that ‘old and ugly’ system could (and should be) the cornerstone of their home security and life-safety (smoke and CO protection) strategy. There is a reason these things are UL certified, after all.
So, please. Save the panel from the trash, and put it to good use.
